Santa Marina History
The legacy of genuineness
Santa Marina began as the vision of a legendary Greek entrepreneur. Elias Papageorgiou loved Mykonos more than any other place on Earth. All year long, he looked forward to spending his summers on the island. He loved the freedom, authenticity and natural beauty of Mykonos, as well as the captivating sea.
In 1979, Elias Papageorgiou purchased his family a spectacular piece of land overlooking Ornos Bay. The eight hectares (20 acres) featured an existing house, a windmill, a pigeon house and a small chapel called Santa Marina, which became the name for the whole estate.
Elias Papageorgiou had a vision for tourism on Mykonos. He believed in working hard and he wanted a reason to spend all his summers on the island. With this goal in mind, he established a hotel – allowing him to mix business with pleasure. Throughout the 1980s, he added luxury villas to the hillside, providing exclusive accommodations for influential friends and visitors. In 1991, he developed the main hotel building and suites, and in 1999, Santa Marina became part of The Luxury Collection.
When Elias Papageorgiou sadly passed away in 2012, his daughter Christiana Papageorgiou took over the operation of Santa Marina. She has since invested more than EUR 40 million to renovate and enhance the property, creating a resort experience that surpasses all else on Mykonos for elegance and exclusivity. With her passion for travel, her love of design and fashion, and her belief in excellent service, Christiana Papageorgiou is continuing the proud family legacy of Santa Marina.
